Seven Great Thoughts which can transform organizations (Culturally and financially) if applied with right spirit

By: P R Ramesh, Principal Trainer and Coach, Seven Steps Business Transformation Systems

1) In god we trust, all others bring data - Dr Edward Deming

If applied, this will easily reduce 75 % of meeting time. Most of the organizations spend hours together in meetings without data.  Arguments, assumptions, opinions take everyone's valuable time. You can make a poster of above quote and display in all meeting areas.

2) The greatest danger for most of us is NOT that our aim is too high and we miss it, BUT that it is too low and we reach it!  - Michelangalo

I have seen organizations taken mediocritic goals, exceed them and celebrate when their competitors doing ten times better by challenging status quo. If this principle is adopted, we can utilize our people potential to their best

3)" If I had 8 hours to chop a tree, I would spend 6 hours sharpening my axe"

Planning, training and development taken back seat in many organizations.  Most of the time senior management will be busy in fire-fighting. By following this principle we can prepare the organization for future (Refer: 4 quadrants of time management by Stephen covey- This is a second quadrant activity)

4) We are what we repeatedly do; Excellence then, is not an act, but a Habit – Aristotle

Consistency is the biggest problem in most of the organizations. We start with great initiatives and don’t sustain them. Like Dr Deming said, “Secret of success is constancy of purpose”.

5) “It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not deserve them”- Mark Twain
Think about ISO 9000 certificates, excellence awards etc...
6) “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day….
Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.”

Great organizations are those which have less problem reporters and more problem solvers.  With proper mentoring, we can create more problem solvers.

7) What cannot be measured, cannot be managed

We need to move from no measurements/vague measurements to clear operational definitions and measurements. This alone will bring in 50 % improvement in any improvement project.

And the eighth quote ……………………….. Which is a pre-requisite!

“Vision without action is merely a dream.
Action without vision just passes the time.
Vision with action can change the world

Prevention is a MINDSET

Many of us regret after something gone wrong. It is not uncommon because preventive thinking is not easy. The other reason is we cannot predict everything so we rely on corrective action. But the recent case made me to think about preventive action once again. After recent case of attack on a lady in an unguarded ATM at Bangalore, the authorities decided to close ATMs which does not meet some security guidelines. It is not a bad decision but again i thought of the other case which is linked to this. Few years back , it was made mandatory that all Malls/public places should have metal detectors OR doors which every visitor has to pass through. Recently i visited many such places and these devices were kept just as a formality and no one bother to care even it was alarming (Except in Airports). They all just follow the regulations without any conviction. Same happens when some road accident happens. Without even looking at root causes , we just introduce some road humps or extra signals. The same is applicable to our personal lives also.

 Food for thought

a) Why our mind dont think about preventive actions - Be it our health or Profession
Recently i heard someone was mentioning that we think more on medicare than healthcare !
b) Corrective actions are not BAD but it should not happen like the metal detectors at Malls. Why we are no negligent about such systems which protect us from terrorist attacks?

My definition of luck

You go to an examination, fully prepared. Reach ontime and receive question paper. You are happy that you know all the answers. You take your pen and start writing BUT it is not writing. you know that it was working fine when you checked before coming to exam. No problem, you have a back up pen. My god ! it is also not working !. So what ? one of your fellow members must be carrying more than one pen. You are shocked to notice that everyone carried only one pen including the examiner. You tried to get a pen from outside but it is a remote area and no way you get a pen with in 3 hours. You tried all your engineering techniques to make one of your pen write but in vain. You waited expecting that some one finish early and you can barrow his/her pen BUT every one took full time. Finally you failed in the exam.So it is your bad luck

Before blaming the luck, let us make all the efforts
